Eight myths about beauty

Text

Grandmothers taught us that pulling out white hairs makes them grow even faster while mums told us that shaving makes them thicker.

You must have had a mom, grandmother or a friend who assured you that some methods of care are excellent for you, while in reality, they had nothing to do with the truth.  Some of us have had grandmothers who claimed that plucking of white hairs makes them grow faster, mothers who told us that shaving the hair makes it grow thicker and friends who swore that mayo is the best conditioner.

A great number of well-intended advices are actually myths and most of us have fell for it at least once. Website beautytips presented an overview of the most common myths and recommends some alternatives that actually do work.

Myth 1: Plucking gray hair makes it grow even more

This is a total myth. Our hair gets whiter as we age and this process cannot be stopped. Someone people will got ‘white’ earlier, some later, but no aging person can avoid it. After we identify the first gray hair we often notice them a lot more all of a sudden. This actually may be caused by the fact that you ‘trained’ your eye to look for them in the mirror, so they may appear plentiful all of a ‘sudden’.

Myth 2: Shaving makes hair thicker

Oh yes, ladies, this is one big myth. Shaved hair seems thicker because razor touches bumpy areas and because new hair grows out of naturally thicker part of the hair.

Myth 3: Mayonnaise is a great conditioner

In fact, there is some truth to this one. If the mayonnaise is right, which means that it contains the right oil and eggs, it can make a good conditioner. Fatty acids and proteins from mayo can nurture the hair.

Myth 4: Putting ice on your skin can reduce pores

No, no and no. Unfortunately, nothing can reduce your pores. The pore size is the result of genetics, not a skin temperature. The fact is that some people naturally have smaller and some larger pores.

Myth 5: Toothpaste dries pimples

Toothpaste contains menthol and other active ingredients that can dry out the acne and make it smaller. However, these same ingredients can also irritate the skin on your face and it is better to use cream against acne.

Myth 6: Applying beer to the skin before tanning results in a bronze complexion

Nope, it is not true. In fact, you should completely avoid the sun exposure without creams containing high SPF. Beer will not do anything useful for your skin. As in most things, nice tan is also a matter of genetics.

Myth 7: Sitting with crossed legs will give you veins

No, it will not. The reason why the veins pop on some people’s feet is not discovered yet, although it is known that some people tend to get them more easily because of their weight, or DNA. Sitting with legs crossed will not make your veins pop, but if they are already extenuated, sitting this way can make them look worse.

Myth 8: Veins get swollen when you wash your feet while tired

No, your veins get swollen because your legs are tired. This is the way for your body to fight fatigue. In fact, it is best to soak your tired feet in warm water to encourage circulation in the lower limbs and thus remove the fatigue.
