Facebook Swarmed With Viruses

Text

Hackers attacked exceptionally popular Facebook, submitting false applications and a new version of the Koobface virus.

Globally famous Facebook social networking site is targeted by hackers whose intention is to steal personal information.

Fake applications and new version of Koobface

In the past week, Facebook was attacked with four malicious applications and the new version of the Koobface virus. The applications try to steal saleable information from the users` profile.

The social networking site has faced five different security problems in the past week, the BBC reports. Creating false messages which require the user`s details, thieves are trying to get the members` trust.

Security companies warn that the popularity of Facebook tempts thieves who deal with high technology.

- Its been a pretty bad week for social networking in general - said Rik Ferguson, senior security advisor at Trend Micro company.

In the past week, Facebook was attacked with four malicious applications and the new version of the Koobface virus. The applications try to steal saleable information from the users` profile.

Zuckerberg against application control

One application tries to persuade users to add their request, claiming to be their friends who have difficulties viewing their profile.

Advisor Ferguson warns that Facebook was constructed in such a way that makes it difficult for members to notice malicious applications.

- So far, said Mr Ferguson, the rogue applications on Facebook have been scary and a nuisance more than anything else –

According to Ferguson, we can expect more sophisticated programmes which hide their exploiting intentions for a long time. Furthermore, he believes it is time for Facebook to consider its way of authorising applications, because it reacts only after users report problems with a certain application.

- Our philosophy is that having an open system anyone can participate in is generally better - he said in last month`s interview.

Fake YouTube sites

The new version of the Koobface virus sends a message which persuades people to visit a fake YouTube site by installing it.

Once the virus is installed, it searches for cookies on the victim`s computer and using the details it finds, it enters other social networks the users is using.

- This is not just restricted to Facebook, it's a growing trend. Though I'm surprised it's taken so long for social sites to be targeted – Ferguson concluded.
