By marrying French King Henry II, she became queen and later the mother of three future French kings.

The marriage, her husband’s voluptuous mistress and Catherine’s small stature gave Catherine no confidence, so the young, 14-year-old bride turned to a Florentine shoemaker whose identity has not been revealed through history. Catherine ordered a pair of shoes with a 5-centimetre heel. These were the first ever registered high-heeled shoes.
