PHOTO: Eri Utsugi Serves Stars Instead of Mushroom

Text

Japanese designers are becoming unbeatable, and if you must love one of them, then it is Eri Utsugi.

The Japanese designer that looks like a young boy, Eri Utsugi, designs under the name Mercibeaucoup. Those who met her claim that her clothing reflects her spirit, which she designs for both sexes , regardless of age. Her philosophy is: Wearing clothing should be fun!

Living her dream

In her collections, Utsugi mixes the imaginary and real world – which can be seen by the fabrics and cuts that she uses.

- Some people never see reality, but only their dreams, or the opposite. I have always tried to follow my dreams, even though it is not good to get stuck in one of them. – explains Eri who dreamed of being a designer, and is now living in a real dream.

She was destined for the world of design, considering that she lived with her mother who made clothing. As a beginner in Tokyo’s fashion scene, she shone with her spring collection for 2001. In search of a unique name for a label, she chose the combination of two French words, Frapbois, and today is designing under the name Mercibeaucoup.

Inspired by elements and events from real life, she focuses on the moment, finding inspiration for new clothing designs.

To the sky!

The always innovative Eri requires a lot of imaginative choreography on the catwalk, with a dose of humour. Unlike the autumn/winter 2007 collection when she served mushrooms on the catwalk, in her spring/summer 2008 collection which she presented in Tokyo, she reaches all the way to the stars.

The imagination of this thirty-six year old designer knows no boundaries, and can be seen from her playfulness throughout her collection, which still contains that spirit of a child trapped in the body of a grownup. She takes the soul of the universe from the Milky Way, turning it into vivid colours which bring the dust of elegance – to an extent which we have not yet had a chance to see through her design.
