Some 40,000 people took part in a mass tomato fight, the so called Tomatina, on Wednesday in Bunol. The fight has been annually taking place for 63 years now in that village near Valencia.
Revellers, numerous tourists from Asia, Great Britain, America, Germany, France and Russia, have went through 120 toms of ripe tomatoes for this mass fight, which was transported to the village centre in trucks.
The tradition of marking the Tomatina mass fight, which is organised on the final Wednesday in August every year, originates from the 1940s when friends in the village had a food fight.
Valencia`s surroundings, where various fruits and vegetables are grown in “huertas”, is considered to be Europe`s orchard.
This year, a large number of Russian tourists took part, as well as the Spanish water polo team, which won fifth place at the Olympic Games in Beijing. They wanted to get acquainted with this “liquidy” ammunition, something completely different to what goes on in the swimming pools.
