Powerful emotional connection decreases the child`s resistance or fear of inappropriate physical contact.
Researchers have discovered a way paedophiles use “communication of deviance”, with the aim of achieving a child`s vulnerability and innocence for their vicious goals.
This knowledge could help parents prevent or at least end escalations of children`s sexual abuse.
- Our children are our greatest gift and our greatest responsibility. The fact that they could be abused in any way, shape or form is horrific - both in the moment of the abuse and in the long-term effect. It's a social problem with grave consequences that is prevalent and needs attention – said Loreen Olson of the Missouri University.
Olson and her colleagues have analysed all published materials on paedophilia and sexual abuse of children and have presented a theory which explains the process of communication predators use to “hunt down children”.
Preparing the groundwork
They claim the offender first approaches their victim, gaining their trust. Paedophiles have an exceptional ability to establish a trusting relationship with their victim because this is how they increase the odds of fulfilling sexual contact with the child.
They slowly approach the child because their goal is to establish greater emotional connection to reduce the child`s resistance or fear to minimum.
This phase, called grooming, means preparing the groundwork for first sexual contact and includes simple activities like sitting on the child`s bed, watching them put their pyjamas on and “accidentally” touching them in an sexually inappropriate manner. This also includes showing pornographic photographs and sexual role playing.
Emotional theft
Paedophile’s goal is to establish a powerful emotional connection with the child, as well as to emotionally and physically single them out of their environment, like family.
Isolation strategies can include offering to baby-sit, drive them home from school/kindergarten or use any dysfunctional relations within their family and among their friends.
Parents are not suggested to start a “witch hunt” and attack a relative or a friend of the family without any reason, but they are advised to carefully monitor who socialises with their children and in what way, Webindia writes.
