"I'm totally deflated at the moment. We were awful and so was the referee. At least I'm in the right place to drown my sorrows," said Paul, 24, one of 80,000 people watching the match on a big screen at Glastonbury festival.
Boos rang out for the first time during the weekend music festival when England was denied a goal that would have levelled the match at 2-2 just before half-time, sparking anger and utter disbelief among the crowd.
"We were bad, but we were robbed," said Joe, 35, who watched the match on one of two big screens here.
"I don't see how the ref missed the goal. The Germans will say it was payback for the goal in 1966, but I wasn't even alive then."
After Germany scored for the fourth time, many people got up and left, a situation repeated in pubs in central London where only a few die-hard fans were left in one-time packed drinking holes to see the final whistle blow.
"Typical. It's the same old story, every time we play Germany," said 22-year-old Dave Wright, drinking with his friends in London's west end district, parts of which were virtually deserted as people watched the game.
"I'm outraged at that goal, that could have changed the whole game. There could have been a third and then a fourth goal," he told AFP.
"Having said that, every goal we conceded was pathetic. The defending was abysmal. We didn't deserve to go through."
His friend Phil Thomas, 21, added: "When that second goal went in we thought it was OK, everyone stood up and went crazy."
But after the goal was disallowed, England couldn't come back and Germany just looked stronger. "Germany played well and we weren't on our game," he said.
