Australia won the men's 4x100 metres medley relay at the world swimming championships on Sunday.
Matt Welsh, Brenton Rickard, Andrew Lauterstein and Eamon Sullivan won the gold medal in a time of three minutes 34.93 seconds.
Japan finished second in 3:35.16 after leading at the final turn and Russia were third in 3:35.51.
The United States were overwhelming favourites to win the event and provide Michael Phelps with his eighth gold medal but they were disqualified when Ian Crocker left the blocks early during the morning heats.
