Bergqvist Gives Up On European Championship

Text

Swedish athlete Kajsa Bergqvist will miss the European Indoor Championship that will take place in Birmingham.

As it was expected, Swede Kajsa Bergqvist will not appear at the European Indoor Championship because she is not satisfied with her current form.

- I have looked for the right form since the first indoor championship in late January, without success. I do not think I could jump over 1.97 – 1.98 metres and I see no reason for me to go to the championship. I have trained well, I am ready, and my main goal is to defend the world champion title from Osaka – said Bergqvist.

Last year in Germany, she cleared 2.08 and set the world indoor record. The Swede is having problems with her Achilles tendon, which she injured in 2004 and consequently missed the Athens Olympics. The top contenders for the high jump gold are Bulgarian Venelina Veneva, who won at Gripe stadium, and our Blanka Vlasic.
