Bowlers Put England Firmly In Control

Text

West Indies started the day on 55 for one and lost two wickets to off-spinner Graeme Swann in the morning session.

West Indies struggled to 221 for five at tea on the third day of the third test against England in Antigua on Tuesday, still 146 runs short of avoiding the follow-on.

Ramnaresh Sarwan was unbeaten on 68, having had two reprieves, with Brendan Nash on six.

West Indies started the day on 55 for one and lost two wickets to off-spinner Graeme Swann in the morning session.

Left-hander Devon Smith was first to go, bowled for 38 after playing an awful shot across the line. He and nightwatchman Daren Powell had added 64 for the second wicket.

Sarwan was lucky to escape a run-out when he was short of his ground as Stuart Broad threw just wide of the stumps. Powell then fell to Swann for 22, taken smartly at slip by Paul Collingwood.

Ryan Hinds helped Sarwan add 70 for the fourth wicket until Andrew Flintoff moved a ball sharply away to have the left-hander caught for 27 by a diving Matt Prior behind the stumps.

Shivnarine Chanderpaul made one before he edged an outswinging half-volley from Broad straight to Prior and Sarwan had another escape when Broad spilled a caught and bowled opportunity.

England declared their first innings on 566 for nine.
