`Our proposal is to increase drivers` reward for winning`, McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh said.
He told a news conference of the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA) that the scoring should be changed immediately to award 12 points to the winner rather than 10 at present.
"Our proposal is to increase drivers' reward for winning," he said.
Under the proposal, to be put to the governing International Automobile Federation (FIA) later this month, the current scoring of 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1 would be changed to 12-9-7-5-4-3-2-1.
McLaren's Lewis Hamilton won last year's title despite having fewer wins than Ferrari's Felipe Massa. The new season starts in Australia on March 29.
