The Ivory Coast coach had been replaced on a temporary basis by Frenchman Gerard Gili.
The son of former Ivory Coast coach Uli Stielike, who had been in a coma, has died, an Ivorian federation official said on Friday.
"He died at half past midnight last night," Jean-Claude Djacus, chief press officer of the Ivorian federation, told Reuters.
Stielike had stepped down as coach on Jan. 10 to be with his 23-year-old son, Michael, who was waiting in Germany for a lung transplant, when his condition suddenly deteriorated.
His son had been treated in a Hanover hospital in recent weeks, German sports news agency SID reported.
Stielike had left the squad just before a training camp ahead of the African Nations Cup and been replaced on a temporary basis by Frenchman Gerard Gili.
Ivory Coast have a training session scheduled at 1700 GMT in Sekondi, two days before their Nations Cup quarter-final against Guinea.
