Kostelic Without Points, First Place Lost

Text

Heel won, Svindal finished second, Raich fourth, and in the total world rankings of the World Cup Ivica is far behind them.

In Sweden, Aare hosted the Super G for skiers, in which Ivica Kostelic sought to join the world’s leading skiers at the World Cup, where he has spent 43 days, all until now when he did not get any points and fell to fourth position. Unfortunately, Svidal and Raich have improved their lead in the world overall rankings, and Ivica was left without points.

WORLD CUP RANKINGS:

  • 1. - Aksel Lund Svindal 1009
  • 2. - Benjamin Raich 907
  • 3. - Didier Cuche 861
  • 4. - Ivica Kostelić 837
  • 5. - Jean Baptiste Grange 777
  • 57. - Natko Zrnčić Dim 134
The winner of the race was Werner Heel from Austria, with a time of 1:13.41, and Ivica was 1.3 seconds slower, which was enough for 17th position. To make matters worse, Svindal finished second, Raich fourth, and Cuche fourteenth, which means that all of his competitors are now even further.

A consoling fact is that Super G is not Kostelic’s discipline and that he will be able to change something after the Giant Slalom that will occur in two days time. However, in order to get back on top, Ivica will have to be brilliant, and his competition must pass poorly.

At this moment that seems impossible, because Svindal’s 172 point lead is most probably unreachable and the dream for the Big Crystal Globe will not come true for the best skier in Croatian history. He can only hope that he will be able to reach the Small Crystal Globe on Slalom.
