AC Milan left back Marek Jankulovski underwent surgery on Thursday after injuring his right knee in Sunday's 1-0 defeat by Empoli.
The club Web site (www.acmilan.com) said it would take some days to asses how long the Czech international would be out for but Italian media said it was likely to be around 40 days.
Milan captain Paolo Maldini has just returned to fitness after knee surgery which could allow Kakha Kaladze to switch across from centre back to left back. Reserve Giuseppe Favalli played there in Milan's win over Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday.
The Czech Republic have already qualified for Euro 2008.
