Mirror: You Can Look Yourselves in Mirror Again

Text

English media are unexpectedly mild in covering the success of their national team in Zagreb and they all praise Theo Walcott.

English media are usually expected to ‘bury’ their national team when they do not play well, but also to eulogise them after great victories. And after one of their biggest victories in history, their media reacted as if they did not win, let alone demolished a strong Croatia. All media are praising Theo Walcott who made the first 11 at the last minute and became a hero with a hat-trick.

Capello got England back, writes the Mirror, stressing that the players can now again look in the mirror. Football has returned in glory, thanks to Fabio, the Mirror praised England’s manager. Interestingly, the English interpreted the victory as getting back to the top, a return from the edge of an abyss.

The always critical the Sun remained has a mild reaction and apologised to the former coach, Sven Goran Eriksson for accusing him of being incompetent two years ago. At the time he took Walcott to the World Championships and everybody laughed at him. It turns out that he was some kind of a prophet because Theo was crucial in Zagreb.

The Sportinglife site says the magic Walcott was the decisive factor and the rest of the team were at the expected level. London’s Times says Capello’s courage won because he dismissed fear and caution ahead of Zagreb and announced a victory in Croatia.

All English media are comparing this victory to the one in Munich against Germany when they won 5:1. Instead of euphoria, the English are still a bit cautious because this is only the second round of qualification matches.
