Rooney had been keen to play but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson decided otherwise and opted to start with Michael Owen.
Manchester United star Wayne Rooney was named on the bench for Tuesday's Champions League match at Old Trafford with CSKA Moscow after becoming a father for the first time.
Rooney, whose wife Coleen gave birth to a son Kai Wayne on Monday, had been keen to play but United manager Sir Alex Ferguson decided otherwise and opted to start with Michael Owen and Federico Macheda up front.
- Wayne's been pretty busy for the past few days! - joked Ferguson to Sky Sports.
- He was aching to play.
- However, I took the view that he should be on the bench. Federico Macheda has been in terrific form of late.
- It's the right thing to do. -
Should United beat CSKA they would qualify for the knockout stages.
