Patrik Elias scored twice and had an assist for the Devils, and David Clarkson, Jamie Langenbrunner and Brian Gionta scored goals.
The loss ended the Capitals' five-game winning streak and snapped a four-game skid by the Devils whose netminder Scott Clemmensen saved all three Washington shootout shots.
The Capitals had dramatically forced overtime on Alex Ovechkin's second goal of the game with less than a second to go in regulation.
Parise then won it for New Jersey with a wrist shot past Washington netminder Jose Theodore.
"It's a huge win for us," Devils captain Jamie Langenbrunner, scored a second-period goal, told reporters. "That would've been tough sitting on five (losses) in a row."
Patrik Elias scored twice and had an assist for the Devils with David Clarkson and Brian Gionta also among the goals.
Gionta gave New Jersey a 5-4 lead with 8:20 to play before Ovechkin, taking a pass from Nicklas Backstrom, slid the puck past Clemmensen to level the scores with less than a second to go.
"It's an unbelievable feeling to score a goal (in the final second)," Ovechkin, who collected his 10th point in the past five games, told reporters. "The game is probably over. Then you score and all your emotions come back."
But neither he, Viktor Kozlov nor Boyd Gordon could find net in the shootout.
"Giving up one late was tough," Langenbrunner said of Ovechkin's goal. "(But) tonight, more than any game in the (losing) stretch, ....We were able to respond to adversity."
Backstrom had a hand in all five Washington goals, scoring one and assisting on four others.
The Capitals' Alexander Semin, the league's leading scorer, missed the game with an undisclosed injury.
