`I took some rest after the Australian Open. I needed to have a fresh mind`, Djokovic told reporters after his first-round win.
A refreshed Novak Djokovic started his Marseille Open campaign with a 7-6 6-4 win over Frenchman Jeremy Chardy on Wednesday. The world number three has been out of action since he retired against American Andy Roddick during their Australian Open quarter-final last month.
"I took some rest after the Australian Open. I needed to have a fresh mind," Djokovic told reporters after his first-round win.
The top seed served 13 aces and only had to defend one break point against the 22-year-old Chardy, who reached the final of this month's South African Open.
Djokovic next faces Czech Jan Hernych.
Local favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also reached the second round with a 7-6 6-2 win over Kazakh Andrey Golubev.
The fourth-seeded Frenchman next meets Italy's Simone Bolelli.
