After a lot of suspension in the air, after lots of high hopes and expectations, in a tight battle Rio de Janeiro won Olympic Games of 2016
For the first time, Olympics will take place in South America. The city of Rio de Janeiro will welcome the Olympic Games of 2016 having gained the vote of the delegates of the CIO on Friday, October 2nd in Copenhagen. Rio anticipated Madrid during the last ballot. Previously, Chicago and Tokyo had been eliminated from the race having obtained least vote during the premier ballots.
The Brazilian president Lula had undertook numerous efforts in Copenhagen in order to defend the candidacy of Rio. In Rio, the announcement of the victory was accompanied with an outburst of joy while tens of thousand persons had gathered on the beach of Copacabana. - The city is is ready. Give us this chance -, asked Lula in front of the delegates of the CIO, in the morning. After the victory of Rio, the Brazilian president, with tears with eyes, declared that - all Brazil was in for the feast -. - We shall organize the most extraordinary Games that the world knew -, he added.
In the first ballot, the voters had created the surprise by eliminating Chicago, then Tokyo. The fast elimination of Chicago, which acted as favourite, was a surprise. Especially since the candidacy received the public support of the president Barack Obama, who had gone to Copenhagen, on Friday, to try to convince the delegates of the CIO. In the American city, thousands of persons who followed the real-time vote were silent, apparently shocked to the results announcement. In Tokyo, the elimination was announced in the middle of the night, and no mass demonstration had been planned.
