The New Orleans Saints and Louisiana officials have reached an agreement that will keep the team from relocating for at least the next four seasons.
The contract for the Saints to play in the Louisiana Superdome has been extended through the 2010 NFL campaign, Saints owner Tom Benson announced on Monday.
"Our commitment to New Orleans has been unwavering," Benson said in a statement. "During this period, I anticipate both parties exploring all options available to retain this very important relationship beyond 2010."
The Saints have been rumoured to be on the way out ever since Hurricane Katrina slammed into the Gulf Coast in August 2005, putting much of New Orleans under water and severely damaging the Superdome's roof.
But while much of the port city has yet to be rebuilt, the Superdome underwent a $186 million renovation and the fans responded by selling out the entire 2006-07 season.
The rejuvenated Saints reached the NFC championship game for the first time in franchise history but lost to the Chicago Bears 39-14.
"We've been steadfast in our belief in Louisiana and have put all of our resources into being part of the rebuilding of the entire region," said Benson. "It's always been my strong belief that as a team, we can achieve more than any individual.
"And by that I include the fans, because they've always been a big part of the New Orleans Saints. There are still a lot of challenges ahead, but by focusing on the future, we can move forward instead of looking back."
