SALT LAKE CITY, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Canadian skier Sarah Burke died Thursday at age 29, nine days after sustaining a severe brain injury in the superpipe at Utah's Park City Mountain Resort.

Family members and hospital officials said Burke died at 9:22 a.m. Thursday at University Hospital in Salt Lake City, The Salt Lake Tribune reported.

Burke crashed in the superpipe Jan. 10, tearing a vertebral artery in her neck that caused bleeding in her brain and cardiac arrest, the newspaper said.

Burke's publicist said in a statement she sustained "severe, irreversible damage" and "passed away peacefully, surrounded by those she loved," adding her organs and tissues were donated.

Burke won gold medals in superpipe at the X Games in 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2011.
