A Russian soccer fan was taken to hospital after he was stabbed outside the City of Manchester Stadium following the UEFA Cup final.

The Manchester City Stadium was the venue but the soccer fans who flocked to northern England were from much further away.

100,000 supporters of the Scottish club Rangers turned the city blue ahead of the UEFA Cup final against the Russian team Zenit St Petersburg.

Those without tickets gathered in parks and gardens to watch the match on large tv screens.

At first there was a carnival atmosphere but it didn't last.

When one of the large screens broke some fans - fuelled by too much alcohol - turned violent.

They hurled bottles and cans at riot police and several officers were injured.

One Russian fan was also stabbed in the back and taken to hospital for treatment.

Thirty fans were arrested for various offences.

The rest went home - the Russians celebrating their team's 2-0 victory - the Rangers fans licking their wounds.
