Yallop Leaves Galaxy and Beckham, Earthquakes

David Beckham will play under a new coach in his second Major League Soccer (MLS) campaign next year after the Los Angeles Galaxy released Frank Yallop from his contract on Monday.

Former Canada international Yallop, head coach at the Galaxy when Beckham joined the club in July on a five-year deal, will leave Los Angeles to take charge of the San Jose Earthquakes.

The Galaxy, in compensation, will receive the Earthquakes' third round pick in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.

"Frank steered our team through a unique and challenging period in our history," Galaxy president and general manager Alexi Lalas said in a statement.

"He is a friend and a gentleman, and I want to personally thank him for his contributions. We wish him nothing but the best in his return to San Jose."

Yallop became the fifth coach in Galaxy history in June 2006, guiding them to the 2006 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final and this year's SuperLiga Final.

However, the club has mainly struggled since Beckham joined them on a five-year contract which could potentially earn him a reported $250 million, primarily from endorsements.

The Galaxy lost 1-0 to the Chicago Fire on the last day of the regular season, extinguishing their faint hopes of reaching the playoffs. They finished second last in the Western standings of the MLS with a win-loss-draw record of 9-14-7.

"We've felt that he's a good manager and a strong character with the team so it was disappointing for us to lose him at this stage," former England captain Beckham said.

"He's not walking away. He's looking after himself and his family. It's what we would all do. We're sad to see him leave. We wish him all the luck and all the best."
