7 killed in Karachi after activist slain
The violence came after gunmen shot to death Mansoor Mukhtar, a member of the liberal, progressive Muttahida Qaumi Movement, at his home early Tuesday, Dawn News reported. Mukhtar's brother and sister-in-law were reported injured in the attack.
A statement by MQM blamed members of a gang.
The MQM, the dominant political party in Karachi, demanded Pakistan's president, prime minister and other authorities bring those responsible to justice.
MQM members walked out of National Assembly proceedings to protest the lack of law and order in Karachi. An MQM committee urged its workers and activists to protest peacefully.
Pakistani federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik, who said he would travel to Karachi, said a committee has been formed to investigate Makhtar's murder.
Malik set a 24-hour deadline to restore peace to the city.
The MQM called for a day of mourning.
