Afghan and French presidents meet in Paris

Text

PARIS, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Afghan President Hamid Karzai met with French President Nicolas Sarkozy Friday, to discuss France's role in Afghanistan, officials said.

During their talk, the two leaders are expected to come up with a long-term strategic agreement on France's role in Afghanistan after all international troops are out of the country in 2014, Voice of America reported.

The meeting comes after Sarkozy suspended France's training and support operations in Afghanistan, after an Afghan soldier killed four unarmed French troops in eastern Afghanistan last week.

Sarkozy said he would consider an early pullout if security measures in Afghanistan for the French troops are not improved; however, a French foreign minister said this would no happen.

After his stop in Paris, Karzai will stop in London and in Rome for similar discussions with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Italian Prime Minster Mario Monti.
