On May 24, 1943, Josef Mengele became the chief physician in the Auschwitz concentration camp.
The infamous doctor, also known as the “Doctor of Death”, was an SS officer and a physician. He monitored the selection of prisoners on entrance to the camp. He used prisoners for human experiments that were very cruel. For example, he wanted to establish how long a baby can go without food and left it to die.
After World War Two, he hid in Germany after which he fled to South America. He died before Nazi hunters caught him. He accidentally drowned in Brazil and a DNA test confirmed he was dead.
