Aussie lawmaker facing child porn charges

Text

ADELAIDE, Australia, May 1 (UPI) -- South Australian Premier Mike Rann is seeking the suspension of a Labor member of Parliament charged with child pornography offenses.

Members of the Labor Party state and national executive leadership will having a phone hook-up Monday to discuss the matter.

Rann told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Sunday he has firm views on what should be done.

"I have asked the Labor Party both at the state and national level to suspend the [member of Parliament] who's been charged, obviously because I think it'd be inappropriate for [the person] to be a member of the Labor caucus during the time of these legal proceedings," Rann said.

Under Australian law the lawmaker can not been named until he has his first court hearing, which will be later this month.
