Holocaust Remembrance Day has not been marked so far because the executive authorities did not decide on it. This will be this first time.
Bosnia-Herzegovina will mark the 27th of January as International Holocaust Remembrance Day after all.
This will be the first time the country marks remembrance day, which was decided some ten days ago.
Bosnia-Herzegovinan media wrote two weeks ago how BH, almost the only one in Europe, will not mark the International Remembrance Day, and all because the executive authorities did not decide on the matter.
Zeljko Komsic helped us immensely
-It was up to the Presidency to reach a decision on marking Remembrance Day, but they have not done it until now because of disapprovals of national parties and disaccords of religious communities. However, a man appeared who was not nationally burdened, Zeljko Komsic. He reminded us, supported us and the BH Presidency a few days ago on its sitting decided to mark that day. This is extremely important for us and significant- said Eli Tauber of the Sarajevo Jewish community
700 Jews living in today`s Sarajevo
Before World War II, 14,000 Jews were living in Sarajevo. During the war between 10,00 and 12,000 were killed, some emigrated, so that around a thousand of them live in this country today, 700 of which in Sarajevo.
Tomorrow`s marking was organised in a co-operation with the Crime against humanity research and International law Institute of the Sarajevo University, BH History Museum and Historic Archives of Sarajevo, under the patronage of the BH Presidency.
