Brammertz: Mladic And Hadzic Cannot Avoid Trial

Text

Brammertz said that after the ICTY stops working, a mechanism will be established to secure their trial.

All persons indicted by the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia (ICTY) will face trial before an international court, which refers to two renegade defendants Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, said chief prosecutor of the ICTY Serge Brammertz.

- The message is simple: there is no impunity and there cannot be a refuge for Mladic and Hadzic. They will be trialled before an international court, regardless of where and when they are arrested – Brammertz said in an interview published by the Sarajevo-based Oslobodjenje daily.

He confirmed that efforts were taken in collaboration with Serbian authorities for the two renegade defendants to be brought in while the ICTY is still functioning. He explained that if this does not happen, a mechanism will be established to secure everyone faces trial, regardless of when they are arrested. He added that the United Nations were currently finalising plans concerning the project.

Brammertz pointed out that the ICTY Prosecution is currently preparing for Radovan Karadzic trial and that it will introduce many witnesses and material evidence to additional shed light to grave crimes and determine Karadzic`s personal responsibility.
