No one on the train was injured, a spokesman for East Coast Railway told Reuters.
An express train hit the car at a level crossing near Bargarh town, 380 km (240 miles) from Bhubaneswar, the capital of Orissa state, officials said.
"12 people were killed ... two others critically hurt," Pradeep Kapur, Orissa inspector general of police in charge of railway security told Reuters.
