Some 27 people died when a bus burst into flames in southwestern China's Chongqing municipality on Tuesday, and another 11 passengers were injured, the official Xinhua agency said.

The bus, with 38 people on board, was heading downtown when the fire eurpted just after 5 p.m. local time, the report said. It gave no details on what might have caused the blaze.

Survivors of the fire, which rescuers said was "fierce" were rushed to a nearby hospital, while two vice-mayors visited the site of the accident, Xinhua added.
