HALIFAX, Nova Scotia, Jan. 16 (UPI) -- A Canadian navy intelligence officer faces charges he passed secrets to a foreign entity or terrorist group, court documents filed Monday indicated.

The Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Jeffrey Paul Delisle, 40, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, was arrested during the weekend and was charged with several counts of breach of trust under the Security of Information Act.

Delisle allegedly broke the law repeatedly between July 2007 and this month.

The CBC said there was no indication what information Delisle is alleged of passing, or to whom he passed it. However, a senior defense official told the network the alleged breaches did not pose a threat to public safety.

Delisle joined the reserves in 1996 and went on active duty in 2001. The defense official said he worked for a naval intelligence facility called HMCS Trinity.

Delisle was in custody pending a bail hearing Tuesday, the CBC said.
