Croatia among 20 countries who paid UN debts

From 192 member states of the United Nations, only 22 countries met all of their financial obligations.

From a total of 192 UN members, only 22 countries, including Croatia, fully meet their financial obligations to the World organization, said Angela Kane, UN Undersecretary for Management, Reuters reports.

Only 22 countries paid the UN budget all that they owed for the year 2008/2009. Some of the fees include a contribution to the regular budget and peacekeeping missions, international courts and renovation of UN headquarters in New York.

Countries that met their obligations are Australia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Canada, Congo, Croatia, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand, Niger, Philippines, Singapore, Italy, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland and Tajikistan.

The country that usually contributes the most to the budget of the UN, the United States, has not met its financial obligations yet, said Kane.

UN members still owe 3.1 billion for the year 2008/2009, said Kane, warning that the number of countries that fully met their obligations to the UN is lower than last year.
