The Croatian-Montenegro border on Prevlaka Peninsula will be solved by an international court. Currently a temporary agreement is in effect.
The Montenegrin vice-premier for European Integrations, Gordana Djurovic, said on Sunday she did not expect the issue of the border between Montenegro and Croatia on Prevlaka Peninsula to affect the dynamics of Montenegro drawing closer to the European Union.
The European Commission’s delegation chief in Podgorica, Leopold Maurer, said on Friday that because of the problems with Slovenia and Croatia her had heard in Brussels that candidate countries and potential candidates would not begin negotiations with the EU until they solve their border issues.
The court will decide on Prevlaka
Gordana Djurovic told Podgorica’s news agency MINA that the European Commission’s message that all border issues with neighbouring countries should be resolved before starting accession negotiations in order to avoid problems in negotiations, was in good faith towards Montenegro.
- Montenegro treats this issue responsibly and seriously and there is no doubt that all borders will be clearly defined before the accession talks begin – she said.
Croatia and Montenegro agreed to put the issue of the border on Prevlaka before the International Court of Justice in The Hague and that both countries would respect the court’s decision. At the moment, a temporary agreement is in effect with which both countries are content.
