The last time a photograph of Castro was made public was in November when Chinese President Hu Jintao visited Cuba.
Castro, 82, went into seclusion after a 2006 operation for an undisclosed intestinal ailment, and since then he has been seen in occasional videos and photos. He later ceded power to his younger brother, Raul Castro.
Fidel Castro had not received visiting heads of state in recent weeks, and speculation had surged that his health had seriously deteriorated. So it was a surprise that he met with Fernandez, who was in Cuba on a four-day official visit.
