EU enforcing ban on small hen cages

Text

BRUSSELS, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The European Commission says it will take action against farmers in France that keep hens in tight quarters called battery cages.

EU Health Commissioner John Dalli said France has been added to 13 other countries in violation of the ban on keeping hens in battery cages, Radio France Internationale reported Thursday.

Farms that violate the ban will not be allowed to sell their eggs to retail outlets or to export them but will be allowed to sell them to food processors.

The deadline for complying with the ban expired Jan. 1 and Dalli pledged to crack down on violators in the next few days.

"We will have zero tolerance for those who do not respect the law," Dalli told a Brussels press conference.
