Nikola Kavaja, who tried to kill the late president of the former Yugoslavia, Josip Broz Tito, four times, has died in his flat in Belgrade. During the time of the former Yugoslavia he was proclaimed public enemy no. 1, Serbian media reported.
On one occasion Kavaja hijacked an American passenger plane which he intended to crash into the building of the Central Committee because, as he said, the building was full of communists. In the end he let the passengers go and the pilot took him to Ireland which extradited him to the United States. He was sentenced to jail in America in the period from 1979 to 1997 for hijacking. He returned to Serbia in 2003. He was arrested again in the “Sword Operation” launched by police after the assassination of Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.
His friends called him a true patriot and a great anti-communist. A documentary was filmed about him called “Nikola Kavaja – Tito Hunter”.
