French police arrested a man and a woman on Wednesday in connection with the shooting of two Spanish policemen on a surveillance operation in France aimed at the Basque separatist group ETA, France's interior minister said.
One of the policemen was killed in the shooting on Saturday in the small southwestern port of Capbreton, and the other is in a critical condition.
"The police have just arrested ... an armed couple who fit the description of the individuals wanted for the killing of a Spanish policeman perpetrated on Dec. 1," Interior Minister Michele Alliot-Marie said in a statement.
She said the process of identifying the couple was under way.
The two suspects, who were carrying a revolver and an automatic pistol, were arrested as they were about to board a bus in the southern French village of Chateauneuf de Randon, a police source said.
