H5N1 Virus Confirmed In Hungary

First case of an extremely dangerous Bird Flu virus H5N1 in Europe was confirmed. Hungarian goose is the first victim.

The first case of the bird flu this year was confirmed.

Hungarian authorities notified the European Commission of a highly contageous bird flu outbreak in the Csongrad area, southeast of Budapest, the European Commission reports.

Testings were carried out after an unbelievable mortality rate was reported in a flock of 3,000 geese. Euthanasia has been performed over all infected geese.

Good Hungarian reaction

European Commission spokesperson declared how Brussels was exceptionally satisfied with Hungary’s reaction and there was no current threat to the Hungarian poultry or its export.

A protection zone has been established, three kilometres wide and of about ten kilometres of supervision”, stated the spokesperson, adding that experts would meet on Friday with the ministers who are supposed to discuss the issue on Monday, but if an escalation did not occur, they would be happy that these measures were enough.

Croatia fears

This is the first appearance of bird flu in the European Union this year, but a milder form of the virus has already appeared this year in Austria.

Croatia, due to Hungary`s vicinity, especially fears of the yonder bird flu outbreak.

Since 2003, the bird flu has been confirmed in about 50 countries, and it has killed 163 people.
