GUANTANAMO, Cuba, Dec. 25 (UPI) -- Haitian President Michel Martelly Sunday extended condolences to the families of at least 38 Haitian migrants who died when their boat sank off Cuba.

Le Nouvelliste reported the 38 migrants died Saturday of Guantanamo. The Haitian newspaper said the Cuban coast guard rescued 87 other migrants.

The newspaper Haiti En Marche reported that while Martelly extended his sympathies to the victims' families he also advised Haitians seeking better opportunities not to venture out to sea in boats that are not seaworthy.

He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving the lives of all Haitians and to creating enough quality jobs to lift them out of poverty, Haiti En Marche said.
