HIV-infected man jailed in Sweden

MALMO, Sweden, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A 20-year-old Swedish man was jailed for not informing eight women of his HIV infection status before having sex with them, officials said.

The Malmo District Court convicted the unnamed man of reckless endangerment, the Swedish newspaper The Local reported today, sentencing him to eight months in prison.

Infected with HIV since birth, he was earlier reported to the local Center for Communicable Disease Control for not maintaining regular hospital visits and for not informing his girlfriend of over two years of his status, the report said.

She reported him to the police in December 2010, after which seven other women claimed sexual relationships with the man.

He had been sought by police since July 2011 when a court ruled he should be placed in isolation, and turned himself in after learning a "Wanted" television program intended to feature him.

The court ordered him to pay $32,620 to the affected women, none of whom he infected.

The newspaper did not give the man's name.
