Hungary Failing To Solve Roma Murders

Text

Police declined to comment on the case.

Hungary's Justice Minister on Tuesday vowed to boost police presence in rural areas and acknowledged police failed to solve murder cases against Roma people after the killing of a boy and his father this week.

Justice Minister Tibor Draskovics promised to toughen legislation for crimes involving weapons and put police in every village by the end of the year, but said police could not erase the country's rising ethnic tensions.

"We have not been able to track down the perpetrators of these crimes even though we have a 95 percent detection rate in homicide cases overall," Draskovics told parliament.

"The real change will have to happen inside us," Draskovics said. "The fight against hatred is not a police job."

Monday's killings in Tatarszentgyorgy, 65 km southeast of Budapest, were the latest in a series of more than a dozen attacks on Roma in which 7 people have died over the past year.

It was not known whether the attack was racially motivated, but Roma community leaders said it bore eerie similarities with other attacks and indicated systemic aggression on Roma.

Police declined to comment on the case.

The Roma community is Hungary's largest minority making up 5 to 7 percent of the population of 10 million. Recession and job losses are stoking resentment against the Roma in Hungary.

Roman in Hungary
This is quite strange. It is horrible to have a human being killed for any reason. I do not know if the reason for the killing is racism or not. But, here outside the gates of the Vatican, in the so called eternal city of Rome, we have the Roma persecuted on a daily basis by the Italians and there is not a word in the world media. Rome's mayor is openly anti Roma, neo-fascist, and he has driven the Roma would of the city. There are Roma in jail for the slightest infraction. There has been at least 10 Roma killed in the last year alone. But, I have not seen one headline in the European papers with respect to this and especially as a hatred against humanity. Again, this does not take away from a murder in any place but certainly somebody should look into this from a news perspective. Is one Roma life different then another or are the Italians immune from everything under the sun?
