The top sustained winds of the first hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic storm season had slipped to 70 mph (110 kph).

Hurricane Bertha weakened back into a tropical storm on Saturday as it moved toward distant Iceland over the open Atlantic, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
