Maoist insurgents have blown up a police station in central India, killing at least three constables, an official said on Thursday.

The attack took place Wednesday night in the rebel-infested Bastar region of Chhattisgarh state, the worst-hit among about a dozen states where Maoists are active.

"They also fired all around after snapping the telephone and power lines and blocking approach roads," said police official Girhdhari Nayak.

Thousands of people, mostly security personnel, have been killed in the Maoist insurrection that began about four decades ago.

The rebels claim to fight for the rights of the poor and landless.
