Iran Says Oil Embargo Over Gaza Is Good Idea

Text

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was asked about an Iranian commander`s call earlier this month for an oil embargo on Israel`s supporters.

Iran's president said on Thursday imposing an oil embargo on backers of Israel over its attack on Gaza was a "good proposal" but such an idea was not on the agenda yet.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was asked about an Iranian commander's call earlier this month for an oil embargo on Israel's supporters.

"I think it is a good proposal if Arab countries cooperate. It can't be that nations give oil and it is turned into a bullet, a missile or a bomb on the heads of the people of Gaza. This is not a fair equation," Ahmadinejad said.

"But such a thing is not on the agenda yet," he told a news conference.

Iran, the world's fourth-largest crude producer, has said in the past oil could be used as a weapon in rows with its enemies.

An aide to Iran's supreme leader on Wednesday said oil could be used as a weapon against Israel, the United States and their allies, 10 days after an Iranian military commander urged Islamic countries to cut exports to the Jewish state's backers.

But Saudi Arabia, the biggest producer in the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), last week said that Middle East producers would ignore the commander's call.
