Italian official eats burger to calm fears

ROME, June 17 (UPI) -- Italian Health Minister Ferruccio Fazio ate a hamburger Friday to reassure the public after a new E. coli outbreak in France.

"As long as these patties are cooked at the proper temperature there's absolutely no risk," Fazio told ANSA.

Thursday night, Italian food inspectors in Verona seized 1,500 hamburgers from the German supermarket chain LIDL.

French health authorities Thursday ordered a recall of LIDL patties after five children were infected with the bacteria in Lille.

Authorities said there was no apparent link to the recent E. coli outbreak in Germany that killed 29 people and sickened almost 3,000.
