The killing of Daniele Emanuello was the latest in a string of successes for anti-Mafia police in Sicily.

A Mafia boss who was one of Italy's 30-most wanted men was killed by police on Monday as he tried to escape arrest, police said.

The killing of Daniele Emanuello, boss of a Mafia family in the Sicilian city of Gela, was the latest in a string of successes for anti-Mafia police in Sicily.

Emanuello, 43, had been on the run since 1993 and was sentenced in absentia for murder. He was shot as he tried to escape from a police raid on a farmhouse in central Sicily where he was hiding, police said.

On Nov. 5, police arrested Salvatore Lo Piccolo, who had assumed the mantle of Mafia "boss of bosses" following the capture in 2006 of Bernardo Provenzano.
