The sake house in Kayabukiya has recruited the macaques - Yat-chan and Fuku-chan - to aid waiters in serving customers.

Twelve year old Yat-Chan is the lead monkey. Dressed in a shirt he takes drink orders from guests and brings them to customers' tables.

Fuku-chan, aged two, is still learning and his role is presently limited to handing out paper towels and helping customers clean their hands when they first sit at table.

Customers tip the monkeys with boiled soya beans.

Both Fuku-chan and Yat-Chan were trained by tavern owner Kaoru Otsuka, 63, who is currently teaching three baby monkeys to be his next generation of waiters.
