Kuwaiti government resigns

KUWAIT CITY, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- The Kuwaiti government announced its resignation Sunday, four days after parliamentary elections, officials said.

The decision comes shortly after the Islamist-led opposition made major gains in the elections. Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, Kuwait's ruler, accepted the resignation and asked Cabinet members to remain at their posts until a new government is formed, which is expected to happen before Parliament holds its first session in less than two weeks. The opposition won 34 out of 50 Parliament seats.

The resigning government, headed by Jaber Mubarak Al Sabah, member of the royal family, was formed in November. Kuwait's ruler dissolved Parliament in December after a bribery scandal and a youth-led attack on the Parliament building, Bikyamasr.com reported.
