On May 7, 1920, the Moscow Agreement was signed.
The agreement was signed by the Soviet Russia and the Democratic Republic of Georgia which recognised Georgia’s independence. Russia consented to this on condition that Georgia does not provide asylum to Russia’s enemies on its soil.
Many Georgian politicians considered this an infringement on Georgia’s sovereignty and wanted to dismiss Russia’s request.
After nine months of a fragile peace, the Soviet Red Army attacked Georgia under the pretence that it was assisting the peasants’ uprising in the country and annexed it to the Soviet Union for the next 70 years.
